How to perform a System Defragmentation

First you have to disable your screen saver -

If the screen saver runs it will interrupt the defrag and cause it to start over each time - in other words it will never complete the process.  See instructions for this in the 'perform a Scan Disk' page.

To begin the “defrag” program: Left click on “start,” go to “programs,” then to “accessories,” then to “System Tools,” then click on “disk defragmentation. Be sure that you are telling it to defrag “C” then begin the process.

If it has been a while since you have done this, it could take an hour or more so be prepared to wait.  Even if the system prompts that you are “0%” fragmented go ahead with the process.

When completed, click “OK,” to complete the process,  then reselect your screen saver if you turned it off, and then restart your computer.
