How to
perform a Scan disk
(this is
the same feature that automatically runs if your system is shut down
improperly).
-
First you have to disable your screen saver
- if the screen saver runs it will interrupt the scan disk and cause it to
start over each time - in other words it will never complete the process.
If this is happening, you typically get a message saying Scandisk has
re-started 10 times.
To disable the screen saver:
-
Right click on an empty spot on your desktop, then
click on “Properties,” then click on “screen saver.” Click
on the arrow next to the name of the screen saver loaded. Scroll to
“None” at the top of the list and select this.
-
OR
if you want to leave your screen saver loaded, you can just change the
“Wait” time period to a high number (such as 60 minutes).
-
Click “OK” to exit and apply settings.
Other programs can also cause scandisk to restart
over and over.
(Especially if you are on a high-speed
Internet
connection.)
If this happens, you can press Ctrl-Alt-Delete once and
a screen
will pop up showing all running programs. You
should
be able to “End Task” for any of them except
Explorer
without any problems. You’ll have to do them
one at a
time.
